- What is an 'IRC Operator'? a 'Network Administrator'?
An 'IRC Operator' is a member of the staff of stalkr.net IRC network. They have access to special commands to make your stay on the network more secure, warmer, and are able to help you if you need it on the channel dedicated to help named #Help. A 'Network Administrator' or an 'Admin/CoAdmin' or a 'Services Admin' or a 'Local/Global Operator' are different levels of IRC Operators. The highest level is 'Network Administrator'. Who are the IRC Operators? Myself (StalkR), Ellmout (a good friend), and few other good friends (ElK, Clark...).
- Who are the IRC Operators? Who are the IRC staff members?
Myself (StalkR), Ellmout (a good friend), and few other good friends (ElK, Clark...).
- I want to be an IRC Operator too!
It's very easy: you cannot. There's absolutely no way of becoming an IRC operator, then don't bother asking... it worries us and we have the /kill ready ;)
- I want to join the IRC staff, are you recruiting?
Well... not really. But if we know you for a while, and that you appear to be a good person, responsible, knowing IRC, we can find a place for you: maybe helper in #Help, and if we really like you and if you have all the skills to be a real IRC Operator, we may add you to the staff. It's rare, but can happen: we're open to all those that are worth it :) IRC Operator skills required are: a long experience with IRC on several networks with different IRCds and then different protocols (UnrealIRCd, asuka and others), good at internet networks (know how they work, how to use them, how to think with them, how to program with them), good programmer in common langages (either interpreted or compiled languages, for instance PHP, C/C++ or Java but not javascript nor VB), expert in most commons IRC clients (mIRC, bitchx...) and able to program scripts for them (mIRC scripting langage), little knowledge of perl and TCL/TK for instance for eggdrops, and finally but especially... FRIENDLY!
- Is my IP hidden on your irc network? How can I hide it?
No, it isn't: your IP is shown per default but there is a command to hide it. Type /mode +x. Ex: if your nick is John, then /mode John +x will hide your IP address from being shown (other users cannot see it using /whois John command). However as you can guess IRC Operators are obviously able to see it. But don't be afraid, they're here for your security and will not give (or use) your IP address.
- What is SSL?
Secure Socket Layer : this is a secure connection, it encrypts all you say between your computer and the
server, in 256 bits. In a few words : this connection is *better* than the normal connection, so if you can,
use it !
- How can I connect to a SSL server?
Use an IRC Client which support it. mIRC doesn't support it, but some addons makes mIRC supporting SSL,
as STUNNEL or STUNTOUR. I made a mIRC script, with the dll of stuntour, which is very easy to use and allows
you to connect to any IRC Server with SSL, just
see this.
- Can I have some help online?
Sure, connect to the server and state your question in #Help. If it's a question about the services, you can
use the command '/msg HelpServ Help'. If you have troubles to connect to the network you can
contact ircserver[-at-]stalkr.net
- Can I bring some friends on your IRC Server?
Of course you can ! And remember that this IRC Server supports NickServ for nicknames reservations, ChanServ
for Channel Reservations, HostServ for cool hosts, and many more cool stuff : see by yourself ;)
- All your services are cool. But how can I use them?
Try to use /msg HelpServ Help this bot will help you through all different services.
- Where can I find the commands, usermodes, snomasks, chanmodes of your IRC Server?
Try to use /helpop the help of UnrealIRCd server, and the help of many other IRCds. If you have more questions, ask in #Help.
- What is NickServ?
NickServ is the service for nickname registration. If you register a nick, then it is yours on the network: if someone is using it you can force him to change and then get back your nick. Also NickServ gives you access to other services: ChanServ, HostServ and MemoServ. However be careful: if you don't use your nickname for a long time (NickServ tells you how long, normally 1 or 2 months) then it will auto-expire, this means your nickname will be deleted and everyone will be able to register it, implying you will no longer be the owner! Read carefully NickServ's help with command: /msg NickServ help before asking in #Help.
- What is ChanServ?
ChanServ is the service for channel registration. If you own a channel, and are registered to nickserv, you can register it to ChanServ and then the network will recognize you as the owner of the channel, protect it, set you as operator (and founder) you when you come. With ChanServ you protect your channel against takeovers, you are able to manage VOP/AOP/SOP lists (Auto-voice/Auto-operators/Super-operators) to give special status (and levels) to your friends, and you have access to meany features including BotServ (the robot service, to add a bot on your channel). However be careful: if you don't use your channel for a long time (ChanServ tells you how long, normally 1 or 2 months) then it will auto-expire, this means your channel will be deleted and everyone will be able to register it, implying you will no longer be the owner! Read carefully ChanServ's help with command: /msg ChanServ help before asking in #Help.
- What is MemoServ?
MemoServ is for letting memos to users, only registered users (registered on nickserv). It's very
useful! If you want to let a message to someone, but this person is currently disconnected, then you can
leave him/her a MEMO on MemoServ (he or she must be registered on NickServ). Then when he/she will come back
on the server, MemoServ will inform he/her that he/she gots a Memo and he/she will be able to know what you
wanted he/she to know.
- What is OperServ?
OperServ is *only* for opers, I mean the IRC Operators. Normal users does not have access to it :P
- What is BotServ?
BotServ, a bot (=robot) service, provides bots for you channel, with public commands, auto-op, protections, and many more cool stuff. We created a large number of bots with various nickname+host+userident+realname and then you can choose the one you prefer. If you have an idea of a bot nickname+host+userident+realname that you think is good for the network (and not only for your channel), you can request it. If we agree, we would create it on the network Bot service (BotServ) and everyone would be able to have it on his/her channel too.
- What is HelpServ?
HelpServ provides the Help :D Actually, it only redirects you to the help of the other services...
- Can I have a vhost? (vhost = virtual host = fake host)
You can have the default vhost users.irc.stalkr.net by typing: /vhost stalkr.net stalkr.net. You can have a specific vhost using HostServ: see section below for more information.
- What is HostServ?
HostServ is the free hostname service offered by the stalkr.net IRC network. If you want a special vhost (vhost = virtual host = fake host) powered by HostServ (like '@is.a.dumb' or '@rules.da.world'), ask in #Help and if your host is acceptable, an oper will give you the vhost on HostServ. Do not complain if your host has not been created because it has been considered as unacceptable by an IRC Operator, just choose another one (preferably an acceptable one).
- What is StatServ?
What if I want StatServ on my channel?
What if I want to have my channel on the IRC Statistics page (not the pisg statistics)?
StatServ is the free statistics service offered by the stalkr.net IRC network: just ask in #Help and if your channel respect the rules an IRC Operator will give you StatServ on your channel, and then you'll appear in the IRC Statistics.
- What if I want PoToZ|BoT on my channel?
What if I want to have my channel on the channel statistics powered by pisg (and not the IRC Stats)?
PoToZ|BoT is a private Eggdrop, and you cannot have it on your channel. Remember that PoToZ|BoT is a 'normal' Eggdrop, it means not a special IRC service. Thus you can install your own Eggdrop, with the same script mEL, and pisg, and create the same statistics without the need of any of our IRC services. Questions and help as usual on #Help.
- On which Operating System is running your IRC Server and the services?
The IRC Server and the IRC Services are running on the same Linux Debian unstable server (Ellmout's server), hosted on Ellmout's connection.
- What is the server connection?
The IRC Server is on a connection with bandwidth 20mbit/s down & 1mbit/s up, powered by a modem Freebox v4 (ISP free.fr). However, a normal broadband connection (xDSL or cable, with at least 128kbit in upload) is enough for a small network of 200 users.
- What is the user limit?
Maximum 5000 users per class. We've got slots ^^
You're limited to 5 connections for the same IP. If you need an exception (special network, bnc hosting, lan parties...) contact irc-exception@stalkr.net including all the informations we need to give you an exception (IP address concerned, reasons, delay...).
- What do you use for your network? Which IRC Server, services, bots, stats...?
The IRC Server is powered by UnrealIRCd version 3.2.3 with SSL (Homepage).
The IRC Services are powered by Anope 1.7.12 (Homepage).
StatServ is powered by Denora 1.1.0 (Homepage), then IRC Stats are displayed by phpDenora version 0.9.2 (Homepage).
PoToZ|BoT, an Eggdrop version 1.6.17 (Homepage) offers many features, including small IRC Statistics powered by mEL (mIRC Eggdrop Logger) version 2.0 (Homepage), and then the logs are parsed by pisg version 0.67 (Homepage) a Perl utility to create HTML statistics of channels. This Eggdrop also has several TCL scripts installed, and Eggnet version 1.17 (Homepage), a collection of useful modules for eggdrops.
Note: versions are likely to change if we upgrade since we won't update this page too. These version numbers are here as a reference.
- I love your network, got my own UnrealIRCd server and I want to link my server with yours.
First: thank you! However we're not currently looking for linked servers since we are a very small network. Thus, maybe in the future, yes! But not currently. Moreover, linking processes are complex and we don't want to deal with this until we're obliged. Once again, thank you and maybe in the future, why not!
- Can I do anything on the network that a stalkr.net IRC Operator could consider as bad?
Can I create channels (on the stalkr.net IRC network) dealing with warez or any illegal activities, including porn, racism, nazism, and all the things a stalkr.net IRC Operator could consider as bad?
Can I use (on the stalkr.net IRC network) spam bots, virus bots, clone bots, and all the things a stalkr.net IRC Operator could consider as bad?
Of course not! You cannot do any of these things, especially if a stalkr.net IRC Operator considers it as bad. If you do so, you agree that stalkr.net will not only ban you from the network but also go to sue you and your family in justice for disobeying the stalkr.net IRC Operators. No kidding!
- What if I sue stalkr.net in justice for any reason?
You cannot: by entering the network, you must have read the FAQ as an agreement, and here we decline all responsabilities, of all kinds :) If you disagree, just don't enter the network and do not sue us in justice.
- My nickname/channel got hacked/takeover, help me!
No way: you have NickServ and ChanServ to protect against such attacks. If you have troubles using them, read their help (/msg NickServ help and /msg ChanServ help), ask in #Help.
- I got killed by an IRC Operator, it's an abuse!
No. The first thing you have to learn is that the IRC Operator is your master, and has always right :) Thus, never contradict him/her nor annoy him/her. Don't bother complaining in #Help, it's where IRC Ops resides, and we're very interdependents.
- I am glined from the network, why?
There is obviously a reason. If you think it's a mistake, email gline@stalkr.net and give us all information related to the gline, otherwise we won't do anything for you.
